Baseboard water heating

Yup, my thermocouple burns out almost every year, I always have an extra one laying around since you always need one at the most inconvenient times!

I’m in the top level of a brownstone in Manhattan. The heat is no longer coming through the hot water baseboard radiators. despite bleeding them for hours. Can anybody offer (1) any advice and (2) any recommendations on reasonably priced HVAC specialists for this?

there are several heating guys on this site including myself who can handle this…it may be a blown expansion tank, a failing pump, or any number of problems. Sadly I only s ervice brooklyn and lower manhattan.

Are you positive the heat is on? We have ours on but it hasn’t actually kicked in yet because the temperatures are so warm, especially on the lower level where the thermostat is. It’s often the case the heat doesn’t really get going until temperatures are down in the 40s.

We averaged 2.3 calls per day last season of people who either did not have the thermostat set right (it was too low so the boiler would not kick on), did not have the thermostat in the on position or the switch on/next to the boiler was off (the absolute worst!).

Or worse, dead batteries in a programmable thermostat. The number one reason for heating shutdowns and burst pipes in unoccupied second homes!

I’m going to guess if you bled the water you are handy. Many boilers these days seem to need new thermocouples on what sometimes seems like a yearly basis. If your pilot is working, what happens when your thermostat calls for heat? If the boiler fires up then i’ll reiterate what Eman137 said. Could be a pump or other things – could even be something like a blocked chimney that trips the electronic damper shut and turns off the system (BTDT). You can troubleshoot some of the easy things but beyond that you should call a plumber. Don’t call a “reasonably priced” (unlicensed) one – get a real one. HVAC plumbers are responsible for people’s lives; that is only corner you would be cutting.
