backyard drainage? Tap into sewer line

with respect to that massive rain we had this morning and the drain system i describe above, all of the water is gone from my yard – like 4 hours later. so these things work.

but consult with someone. i did mine on the fly after getting annoyed one day. a pro can tell you how to get the best advantage out of one.

Hi Friends- Have any of you done work on your backyard with flooding/ drainage issues? We had issues a while back with flooding in our basement from backyard flooding, which have been resolved in the basement (put in a french drain with a sump pump in the basement) I but we still have flooding in the yard. I think at this point, we need to tap into the sewage line. If you have had any similar work done and can recommend a contractor that you were please with, please let me know.

Mine too.. ALL the leaders I can see on my neighbor’s houses also are connected to the sewer lines. I thought that was required in NYC.

If I were you, I would find the cause of the problem. Is your gutter clogged? Your neighbors gutter? Is your backyard concrete? Is whatever is there pitched away from the building? Usually is simple to figure out, and inexpensive to correct. When it rains heavy, watch and see what is happening

we did a massive french drain. the problem here was clay. we have like a minimum of 10′ of clay left over from the swamp that was here. it traps the water. so i dug a massive hole and a trench and sloped it all back to the hole. i put a pipe in there with holes in it and wrapped it with a plastic cloth. i then back filled with stone topped by sand and finally bricked over. the water still builds during heavy rain, but it now drains by the next day. it used to stand forever, even in the middle of summer. the idea was to dig the hole below the depth of the clay but at 8′ i decided this was all to dangerous and gave up. i still think the pressure – the weight of the water pressing on the water lower in the hole – helps to press the water out through the clay. not sure. i have been working for (alongside) a geologist/soil engineer on and off since winter and have been asking him some questions about drainage with another issue but the next time i see him i will ask him about these sort of drains.

i suppose one could put a dry well in but they will eventually fill and the water will have to go someplace.

For some feedback; make sure whoever does this looks at the bigger picture. There are a ton of factors at play with this situation. I have always said if a plumber can correctly (and legally) invent a method to account for both Sanitary and Storm even during Flash/Heavy Rains without the major installation of a Detention Tank, they would become the wealthiest plumber of all time!

In addition to my disastrous boiler venting, I have this issue also (my roof drain is connected to my sewer and when it rains, it leaks into my cellar). My sympathies. When I find someone that can fix it, will post here.

The leakage into your cellar might be just a sewer line blocked by roots, easily fixed by Roto Router or a similar service

All the 19th c row houses I have seen in Brooklyn were built with the rear roof gutter running down the rear facade of the building inside the attached shed/mudroom, down into the ground, and into the cellar where it meets up with/turns into the main house sewer drain line and runs to the front of the house, where it empties into the city sewer system. It is perfectly legal. It is at the very least grandfathered in, and if you are repairing it or whatever, you can legally restore it. Our small gutter on the mudroom/shed is relatively new, and it empties into the yard, extremely far away from the house, almost at the rear property line, where so far it has done no harm. I don’t advise modernizing the roof system so it empties into the yard, because in every case I’ve ever seen, this causes massive flooding in the yard, even with a French drain. If you are experiencing water intrusion in the cellar around the area of this gutter, please be advised it may or may not have anything to do with the drain. To test it, when the weather is fine and the cellar is dry, take a hose u p to the roof (easiest to have a roofer do it) and run water into the roof gutter line and see what happens. If no flooding, run water into the ground outside the flooding area and see what happens. Etc. If it is the roof drain line that is the problem, perhaps the elbow underground has deteriorated and needs replacing. If so, this is a job for an experienced plumber who does just this day in and day out, such as someone who specializes in drain lines (NOT Roto Rooter, but an experienced local plumber). We had just such an outfit handle a similar job in the front of our house. They were very quick and neat, had all the right equipment to handle holes and pipes through thick masonry cellar walls, etc. They will jackhammer up a bit of the concrete in the shed/mudroom to do it and then they will patch it and fill it in. If you want it all perfect, you can hire a mason to redo it after.

My setup , and that of the others in my row is similar to what Cate describes with tw small differences. The leader from the roof gutter is outside of the shed (probably a better arrangement ) and the leader from the shed roof gutter empties close to the house with a functional drain near it in the concrete slab. That drain also goes into the sewer line.
