Awkward door question

Thanks @pmody, I’ll give them a call, and let you know what I find out. @stevecym, I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying, but from I’m picturing, a pivot hinge mid way through the door would not well for a 24 inch door. The door would allow less than 12 inches entry on either side which is not very practical. I think I can live without the door stop moulding. Compared to other options, a bifold door would not have one. A french door could have one, but meeting stiles would be an issue. This is for a powder room, so I’m looking for a solution that offers the ability to open easily from both sides, to lock the door, and an acceptable degree of privacy. I have a situation where I would like to create a door that operates like this:

Where it’s a single slab, but when open, the door is halfway on either side of the doorway, so as to remain clear of other doors and objects. Is there a hinge system I could use for this, or any other suggestions how to deal with this situation? A bifold or double door is a possibility, but I prefer a single slab for better separation. The door is 24 inches wide. A pocket or barn door cannot be used due to insufficient wall space to slide into or onto. Any thoughts appreciated.

The term is a pivoting sliding door, if you google that, you’ll find info and companies that sell the hardware. It’s expensive, European hardware, that isn’t used over here.

A bi-fold or swing out door would be a simpler solution.

Yeah, I only see options for cabinet doors, although maybe it would work if I made a lighter door. Do you know any specific brand that can be ordered from USA?

I saw a Italian company named “celegon smart opening systems” that has what you’re looking for. Maybe if you send them an email they’ll send you the hardware. But from experience, a lot of these foreign companies don’t deal with the one off customer in another country.

Yeah that’s the company from the floorplan I linked to. But I’m not optimistic about getting one sent from Italy. If they sell just the hinge hardware, maybe I get lucky and they’ll post it to me. Thanks @greenthinker.

i saw pivot sliding door but what about a pivot hinge? can you mount the pivot hinge mid way through the door? of course it would turn in on the back side and you could not have stop there, but?

I’ve been curious about this type of door hardware as well. Recently saw them used at a commercial entrance.
