I’m sure the answer is no. It sucks. We’re in adjacent brownstones but we hear him all day long through the party wall, and the rear of their house is where he rehearses – juts out so there is no escaping it. They moved from a condo, I assume because the neighbors complained about his incessant rehearsing. It’s torture. Is our only choice to move? Sound proofing the party wall will cost about $30k and won’t do anything to mitigate the noise we hear from that rear window. Talking to him hasn’t helped.

We have told them we hear it all the time. H e doesn’t seem to care. I know he can play til 11PM which he has been doing lately. The silver lining is that the neigbhors on the other side of him are about to start a massive construction/renovation project which may disturb his practicing. Fingers crossed. I’ll take construction noise over a wailing sax. and I guess I’ll take a wailing sax over drums but I was wondering if his incessant playing is grounds for at least saying “you’re preventing us from quiet enjoyment of our house.”

When you live in an urban area you must expect all manner of life noises: police alarms & helicopters, yappy little dogs crying & yapping all day when their owners out. Construction site noise, children screeching & crying etc, one persons tolerable noise is an others nightmare.
I myself prefer musicians any day over any of the above.
Invest in some wireless noise cancelling headphones, is my suggestion.

I have lived in the city for 30 years. This is the first time in those 30 years I have actually considered moving because of noise, Construction projects end. Crying children eventually stop. This guy isn’t going away. When my husband was in a band way back in the day they had a rehearsal space. Because that’s what professional musicians do. I work from home, am on the phone all day long and shouldn’t have to walk around wearing earphones. I like DIBS’s suggestion. It’s a little passive aggressive but might finally send the message. You can make noise? I can make noise.

Here’s an idea. Why not chip in or offer to build a practice booth for your neighbor? A sax player doesn’t need a lot of space. This will be much more effective than trying to mitigate from your house.
Retaliating by being loud as well seems like an exceptionally bad idea for many reasons and that’s an understatement. What about your other neighbors?

Chances are, HE likes NOISE. Retaliating with loud music is passive aggressive and adds more sound to the environment. Acting as though he needs to rent a practice space, “bc thats what professional musicians do” is obnoxious and passive aggressive.

It amazes me how many people on this Forum don’t have the ability to speak with neighbors and come to some sort of compromise. Kill them with kindness is a saying we used to say. I think you have a better chance getting what you want if he can learn to respect you. Your job is to be level-headed, fair, and firm.

@OGNewYork, OP mentioned talking to him doesn’t help. He obv does not care, and wasn’t raised to have empathy for others, much less respect. I say drag his name through the mud that is social media, every time someone googles his name, let it be known that he’s a self entitled asshole. Make a youtube video, twit it, instagram it, hashtag it, what ever it takes, ideally it’ll go viral and you’ll have a fox news article out of it.
