Any idea what's causing this noise and how to stop it?
Thats a termal expansion of the riser. It probably touching a nail or something. Common problem. Was there any renovations in the building recently?

There is this annoying dripping sound coming from inside the heat pipe in my bathroom. It’s an old 1929 co-op building and the super is useless. It wasn’t there last year and it seems to go all night. It’s driving me crazy.

the building needs its steam system worked on…it could be any number of problems but start with making sure that the pressure is not too high…should be .5 to 2 lbs at most

Try to examine the radiator or riser vents above and below you, and your own if you have one on that riser. If its clicking and clacking, try swapping it out for a different valve. Probably a gorton D would be a good guess to try, but you can read up on that. I’m guessing in a big building the boiler is maintained by a pro and they would not set the pressure over 2psi, but stranger things have happened. There are other things to try, but it’s hard to work on when you don’t have access to all parts of the system.
