Am I crazy if I put a sign on my garbage can telling people not to toss their trash unless they live here?

Definitely try it! My (un)educated guess – 5 to 10% reduction. I know not all dog owners are inconsiderate, but poop bags in private bins / poop & pee on the sidewalks is, in my opinion, the #1 quality of life issue in brownstone Brooklyn. Porch pirates are a close #2. Just my personal opinion…

I don’t have pets, but people walking by keep throwing their dog poop bags into my trash bin. By the time I take my own trash out, the smell is awful.

I’m tempted to put a sign on the can saying “Please don’t throw garbage here unless you live here.” Has anyone tried this before? Does it actually work, or will people just ignore it? Any other way to stop this?

I find this often happens when my container is out on the street agter being emptied by Sanitation. VERY annoying, especially since I have to take the bags of dog waste out when I replace the plastic liner. I don’t think people thoughtless enough to do this would pay attention to a sign.

Signs and cameras on my block have encouraged passerby to clean up after their pets and keep pets out of planted tree pits. I haven’t seen any thing aimed at keeping passerby out of trash receptacles.

You are not crazy. It is worth trying. Even if it doesn’t work 100% of the time, you might notice a decrease in the behavior.

A little, yes. If you can’t make your cans un-openable, with a bin or a latch, I suggest mitigating the annoyance by keeping the bins lined with bags. This happens because the city doesn’t have enough bins on the streets and people are trying not to litter.

A lock would NOT help me. I find that people ut poop in my can when It’s out in the street after collection, which is in the middle of the night. I wouldn’t mind so much if people put stuff in my can inside my areaway AFTER I’ve lined it either a 60 gallon bag. I don’t want to handle their bags of poop.
