Advice on Salvaging/Selling Architectural Items in 1899 Brownstone Renovation?

I’ve embarked on a gut renovation of a c1899 brownstone in Ft. Greene and there are a few potentially valuable architectural items I would like to salvage and try to sell–but I have no experience doing so. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about this? The most unique items are 4 original ornate marble fireplace mantels, which my contractor believes may have considerable value. There are also original doors, window shutters and three-story curving wood banister. We have not commenced demo yet, so all items can still be seen in place. Our contractor recommended Craigslist but perhaps there is another route? Also I am unclear on value and pricing. A shame to demolish all of this, especially when it’s all there and so ornate and such a fine house of its time. Your brownstone is circa 1870s Italianate-Neo-Grec and most definitely not 1899 (city tax records are wrong). Your property will be worth far more with the original details intact, new mechanicals, and renovated wet rooms. (No gut renovation needed unless the house has deeply serious structural flaws and even then you can still keep all these details.) FYI the most ornate of the marble mantels is a hard to find item. In any case, your options include selling to a salvage place such as Demolition Depot or Olde Good Things, who will remove and transport. You can also sell the items direct here or on Craigslist, etc. If you go this route, it’s advisable to use a local antique chimney expert to remove and transport the mantels so they don’t break. Your contractor (or the buyer’s contractor) can handle doors, etc.

Usually this stuff not so easy to sell, you don’t get much from dealers, of course if you want to buy one from them they will charge you a fortune. Plenty if these mantels available so no real jackpot. Staircases are even harder to sell since they rarely fit someone else’s project. Brownstones without details are also a dime a dozen….well preserved brownstones always command a hefty premium as your renovation will usually go out of style in a few years

The doors aren’t original but my contractor believes the shutters are. There are pocket doors that match the hinged ones in these images. Those doors look great, to me they look original since the surrounding casing looks original and is not easy to reproduce, i could be wrong. The shutters look added later, looks like there are no pockets for them on the sides. I’d be interested in the tiles in front of the mantels if you decide to take those out. How can I contact you?

Ah, but there are clearly pockets for those shutters stacked three high on those parlor floor windows that come down to the floor. So whether or not those actual shutters are original, there were originally shutters there.

And FWIW, one day I hope to live in a minimalist glass cube, but have a tremendous appreciation for finer things including brownstone detail and would never think of ripping that stuff out of an existing home. . Those homes are disappearing fast.

And as also mentioned, people pay a premium for that detail. We are in a workaday 1910ish home that, because prior owners installed drop ceilings and 1990s engineered oak floor everywhere, we had no idea we had cove ceilings w plaster detail and ornate inlaid floors. We continually joke about how much more we would have paid for the house had we known.

Your floors don’t look original to me. Have you by any chance ever seen a brownstone of this type (with the giant doorways and incredibly high ceilings on the grand parlor floor) that has been gut renovated and all the detail stripped out? The proportions don’t work without all the detail. If your house is narrow with a center staircase, there are lots of options for making the most of the house. It sounds like you should have bought a new condo and you would have saved yourself a lot of time, money, and headaches. That said if you absolutely must do what you claim you’re doing, make sure these items get to people who actually appreciate them. SMH.
