Tree in our front yard belongs to city?
Hi, does anyone has experience with a tree on their property that belongs to the city? Usually the city trees are planted on the sidewalk and have a city tree ID (https://tree-map.nycgovparks.org/tree-map/neighborhood/187)
However, our very large tree is INSIDE our front yard and has a city ID as well which we just found out by chance from our Arborist.

So sorry, didn’t see that! My experience was the city taking action on a non-sidewalk tree pit tree that wasn’tactually on the map, so not quite your scenario. Since it was a hazard obstructing the public sidewalk, we were happy that it was taken care of!

Thank you! Yes I am familiar with the tree map (as linked in my original post) and our tree is listed on there. I am trying to find out if anyone else also has a city tree on their property and see what their experience was when it comes to pruning or removing the tree. Our tree is already large and keeps on growing which damages the surrounding gates, walls and eventually sidewalk.
We will contact the city for any actions and permits but just wanted to research any experience beforehand. Thank you

I use the NYC Tree Map – it shows all the trees managed by the city and records recent pruning and other activities — like the last time it was inspected and any outstanding work orders. It isn’t perfect – I’ve definitely found errors, but as a registered user I was able to report a problem and get it fixed (eventually). You can check to see if your tree is recorded there and it might give you some good info needed before any 311 call, because they may very well tell you to go to the map. https://tree-map.nycgovparks.org/tree-map/dashboard — If you make no headway with the city the organization Trees New York can be a good resource – the staff there is familiar with all the different tree markers the city has used over the years.
