Getting rid of backyard dirt

After a recent patio installation I have mounds of extra garden soil that I need to get rid of. Putting it in black plastic contractor bags and setting it out for trash collection doesn’t seem like the most environmentally friendly choice. Does anyone know the best way to go about getting rid of it? Should I pay someone to haul it away, and if so, what is the going rate? Or can I put it in biodegradable bags and set it out with the trash, a little at a time? I’m not really clear on the best way to dispose of landscape waste in general… the NYC sanitation website just says that the composting program is shut down until the fall, which isn’t much help. Nor do I know where to buy those nifty biodegradable bags… Home Depot?

put bags less than 60 lbs the night before your garbage only pick up date. you can put out 6 at a time. and its free
