Thanks.  I’m asking on behalf of a neighbor who has little time nor skill.  Her lawn was done a few years ago but got mossy during the heavy rains – she’d like someone who knows about upkeep & maintenance to do a refurbishing & can instruct her on how to continue.

What sort of lawn care do you need?  If you are talking about regular lawnmowing, you are better off asking your immediate neighbors; it’s a fairly low-skilled job, so being hyper-local will save you money. If your lawn needs a fix, and you feel comfortable with a bit of a DIY, I recommend checking the Cornell Community Extension website.  http://nyc.cce.cornell.edu/Pages/home.aspx They can analyze a soil sample, and check for over- or under-fertilization, fungi or pests.  They also have a FAQ web page with pictures, so you can figure out the potential issues: http://www.gardening.cornell.edu/lawn/lawncare/diseases.html Often people go to a chain store, and the clerk recommends a fertilizer, as a matter of course.  The real issue might be a mismatch between the grass and the location; a typical urban garden often doesn’t have enough sun for the mainstream, suburban seed mix available at garden centers.  Or the soil might have been overfertilized, and is too rich in nitrogen or phosphates already, and the grass is too stressed to fend off naturally-occurring fungi.
