We are replacing street-facing windows this year. The rear was a breeze (used Lucky Window Products (LWP) / Robert Basile) and the windows look beautiful and weathered the winter well. We went with Trimline’s Eclipse model, wooden interior, aluminum exterior. Since we’re landmarked, we have to go with all wood windows this time for the street-facing windows. Two questions: 1) Wewant the least obtrusive method possible. Our home is finished and we don’t want to live through the mess of a brick-to-brick installation and don’t see the need for it either. LWP recommended Trimline’s Ultra-Fit Sash Replacement System – http://www.trimlinewindows.com/ultrafit.asp – and said they’ve installed it in landmarked homes in and around Brooklyn. Does anyone have any experience with these windows and this type of installation? OR other recommendations. 2) I am doing the landmark package myself … wondering if anyone has any tips or samples that you are willing to share. Thanks in advance!

We redid front and back windows in brownstone, of which the front is landmarked. We chose for brick to brick installation, and does not necessary have to be a big deal if installer sawzalls the window frame to remove from the outside, this way you dont have to remove all of the trim. Regarding landmarked, as I saw no sense in having exterior wood windows exposed to the elements, we decided to try and get alu-clad wood windows approved by landmark. Sure enough in one week the work was approved. Perhaps they are becoming more reasonable/lenient or maybe it depends on who reviews your case.

We did the sash replacement system four years ago – on the smaller windows upstairs it works well but on the oversize parlor windows not so much – we have draughts from both the window surrounds. There are sizeable gaps behind the moulding where I guess the sash mechanisms would have once been housed. We recently removed the mouldings to add insulation which helps but in hindsight we should have gone brick to brick

We also did brick-to-brick and the installers added insulation and sealed very carefully. We used E-Z Tilt in Bay Ridge. They are experienced, tidy and quick. But not inexpensive. We also chose Marvins which cost a fortune but have performed extremely well. If I had to do it again, I might chose a less well known but still high-end manfacturer like Kolbe or Lincoln. But without good installation, you’re throwing good money after bad, which is why we’ve stayed loyal to EZ-Tilt.
