Any advice for a first time visit to the Department of Buildings? I’m doing due dilligence before a purchase so looking to see if there’s any additional info on the property or outstanding violations. There is no i-card online and no C of O (pre 1938 but classified B3 by Finance Dept). Looking to see if previous plans are available detailing the configuration of the property. Is there anything in particular I need to bring (besides some reading material)? Also…may be a dumb question but is the main office in Manahattan where I should go? This is for a Brooklyn property.

The Brooklyn DOB is in the municipal building right behind Borough Hall. Violations are all on the DOB website, just put in the building address on the lower left.

Open complainst are not violations. That said the DOB BiS page would show any work permits or applications filed pertaining to the renovation work. You won’t find any more info about the complaints by going down to the DOB until they inspect and find no cause or inspect and issue a violation in wich case you will be contacting the ECB If you go down to the DOB you will need ID and cash for any photo copies as the files are not to be removed from the room. Know the block and lot number As for due diligence I might want to check the HPD web site for past and active complaints especially if you are buying a building with tenants in place……………

If your house has has no C of O you should check on the HPD website if it has any ‘B’ units, which indicates that it’s an SRO.

Bring all your meds with you to that place. It is a horror to navigate most of the time. If you are lucky you cand do your own search on the machines available to the public (for a price). God help you if you have to rely on the assistance of the **ahem** professionals behind the counter. They can be nasty and (yes I’ll say it) Lazy. As long as you are aware of possibly dealing with that then you can soldier on. Good luck
