I’m new to Brooklyn and am looking for the best garden center. I have a small front yard that is a blank slate, and I would like to add native perennials, mulch or pebbles, and pavers to it. Can anyone suggest the best place to purchase garden supplies?

I think your definition of best would probably differ from mine. But in my case, if I wanted to buy what you’re looking for I would just go to my local home improvement store Lowes or Home Depot. Normally they have what you listed above and they also tend to have a well sized gardening / patio (paver) section. Most of their pavers are made from concrete, if you’re interested in natural stone I would advise a different retailer.

Mike, thanks for answering. By “best” I mean somewhere with a good reputation and good prices. I try to support local businesses, although if all else fails I will go to a big box store.

Shannon’s is ok, and I’ve shopped there for years. Very nice owners. I think selection is better at Chelsea Garden Center in Red Hook–more interesting plants there outside of the typical impatiens, pyrocantha, juniper et al. Staff at Chelsea are also very, very nice. I went there to get some native shrubs for a backyard we redid last summer. As I remember, not as cheap but plants are good quality.

Shannon is good, as is Kings County Nursery; we usually go to one of those. Chelsea Garden Center is great, but quite expensive. The Brooklyn Terminal Market, with several wholesale dealers, might be your best bet.
