gardeners
I have gotten quote from a reputable gardening service for a couple of nice fiberglass planters and plants/tree for my front “yard.” I know the planters are very expensive, but I thought the quote for $3,200 was a little out of line. Is it? 2’x2′ planter with a small tree and some surrounding perennials and a 18″ x30″ planter with perennials. Thanks

run run like the wind. i put in a 6 caliber tree, roughly 15 ft tall, with nyc permits and approved tree specialist. Digging out tree pit ( opening the sidewalk), cost of tree, labor and permit was $1,000\. So RUN RUN LIKE THE WIND

We just redid our garden and were pretty blown away by costs- but yes, most of it is labor and moving heavy stuff– $3200 sounds a bit nuts though. Here are some really cheap fiberglass planters we have for sale on Craigslist if interested– http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/grd/4661372215.html They didn’t go with our new backyard. Good luck!

Several years ago our block association bought some huge and lovely planters, soil, etc. from Lapide at the Brooklyn Terminal Market. The price was fairly reasonable. They delivered it for us. We could have saved some money by getting one of our neighbors with a truck. These were concrete planters and VERY heavy.

Edit to add, I’m guessing a lot of the cost is just their labor fee. If you’re willing to do the work, a good nursery will tell you what you need and how to do it.

I’ve never specifically done this, but that sounds high to me. The plants and dirt, for quality stuff, I’d put at $500 max, probably a fair amount less depending on what you get. As for the planters, I don’t know much. I’d suggest going to big nursery and get some advice from them. If you have a car, I recommend Weisner Brother’s in Staten Island. I’ve gotten lots of really healthy plants from them over the years and they can give you good advice. I think they have a fair amount of planters there and if they don’t have what you want, might be able to point you somewhere else. In Brooklyn, most nurseries don’t have the selection Weisner has but I might start with Shannon or Chelsea Gardens (this one is near Fairway). Brooklyn Terminal Market vendors might have planters, but I’ve never looked for them there and I’ve got mixed quality of plants there.
