Wood Flooring Help

I am looking into removing the wall to wall carpeting in a bedroom (140 sq. feet) and replacing with wood flooring.  Apparently there is no proper flooring underneath so I am wondering how much work this would entail (time and cost-wise)?  Also looking for suggestions as to types of flooring (real wood vs. engineered, etc.), where to buy and installation recs.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks for the feedback.  I am not sure what is underneath the carpet yet, just that the carpet was not put over a floor that we could just refinish.  It sounds like it may be a bigger job than we can tackle at the moment, but good to have this information to help me look into it further.

What do you mean by “no proper flooring”? You can lay plywood down before installing tongue and groove. You may have to take up what is there if it’s “not proper”. It’s not clear whether or not you want to hire someone for installation or do it yourself. Personally, I don’t find DIY installation to be a big deal but I always hire a floor guy to do the sanding/staining/poly because you kind of have to be meticulous with that part so you don’t get sanding grooves, dust and bubbles under the sealer. IMO,wood over engineered any day of the week. You can always get pre-finished real wood to save a few steps. Once it’s installed (a day’s work for a pro or maybe 2-3 days for a first timer DIY), it’s done. Staining and sealing raw floors would take at least 3 days of pro time with 2 coats of sealer. There’s drying time between each coat and you can’t walk on it for a few days. But it always looks better than pre-finished! You can rent tools for DIY install. Costs vary according to what you’re laying down and how you do it. The floor strips themselves could run anywhere from $.99 to $20 sq ft, but average oak at HD is like $2-$3 sq ft, if memory serves.

If you could pull up a corner of the carpet and describe what is currently underneath or upload a picture I can make a more accurate assessment for what you should do regarding **wood flooring**. Best, Carlos Salazar 347-746-8439 http://www.jcmartinrenovation.com/wood-floor-installation/
