Wood Floor in Closet

Thanks in advance for your advice as I am trying to figure out my options.  I live in a pre-war co-op and the floors in the closet look like nothing has been done to them in decades, if ever.  Hence they are in pretty rough shape with some gaps between the planks which are even more evident with the dry weather we are having and the wood has contracted.  I would like to do something so the gaps are not showing by either filling them or covering them.  My first thought was to get some stick on faux wood laminate flooring from Lowes or Home Depot.  Its a closet, no one sees the floors except us, however before I take that step, I was wondering if there was any other (inexpensive) recourse that I could do or have done where I am not putting something over a wood floor that could be rehabilitated.

I would spread some diatomacious earth (a fine, non-toxic-to-mammals powder that kills insects) on the boards and under the baseboards in the closet to keep out carpet beatles, etc. cleaning up the excess on the surface of boards. And then use something easy to install like the FLOR carpet tiles to give the closet a more finished look.

Thanks for your reply.  My biggest concern beyond it looking sloppy is any kinds of bugs that can come up through the gaps.

What is your concern about the floor? Are you getting splinters, are you worried about clothes-eating insects hiding in the cracks, or does it just look sloppy? Personally if it just bugged me to look at, I would buy a dark colored sisal or similar rug or runner to put in there covering the floor, or maybe something like FLOR modular carpet tiles, which aren’t attached with adhesive or anything else and could be cut to fit the space perfectly. Probably not worth it to refinish just the closet or put in new but low-quality flooring.
