I wouldn´t want scared people in my house. They attract crime 🙂

Hey B’stoners, I have a prospective tenant who was somewhat concerned about safety in the Stuyvesant Heights-Bed-Stuy neighborhood. I’m a lifelong Bed-Stuy native so my view on this may be a bit skewed. Any thoughts from people who have recently moved into the nabe or who have been here for a few years? Thanks

This is a HUGE neighborhood and varies widley in terms of feel and sense of safety. We recently moved to Stuyvesant East, family with 2 kids. Been here about 8 months and I LOVE my block. If you have been following many of the posts here you can get a pretty quick feel for the trend that has been going on in Bed-Stuy. That said, like many neighborhoods, safety is subjective and varies depending upon who you talk to and can vary from block to block. There are blocks near me that I would not venture down during very late hours, but common sense should prevail here and I think this mentality can be used almost anywhere that you live in a city like NY. I think if someone is tentative they should check out the area first, walk it during the day, drive through it, just to see how they feel before commiting. If you want trouble you can find it, anywhere, not just here. I think it really comes down to being smart and aware of your surroundings. Many of the blocks in Stuy-East are beautiful, quiet and filled with folks who have been in their homes for decades. My immediate neighbors have been here since the 70’s, up and down the block is a real sense of community and I feel I really lucked out with some great neighbors. Hope this helps.

I would second nalusurf’s answer. Macdonough and Lewis is not far from where I am (Halsey between Throop and Marcus Garvey)…I think common sense should prevail when coming home after 11pm, but for the most part I feel totally secure and safe anywhere around there, and I say that as a white 35-year old. Fulton street is a little ugly and sketchy, and that can be very off-putting to a new resident–the first time my wife saw it, she was totally turned off. That, and the bad reputation that Bed-Stuy has for crime, color most people’s perceptions of the area. But Stuy Heights may as well be a different planet from the north side of the neighborhood, near Bushwick and Broadway, which is what most people who aren’t familiar with the area think of when they think “Bed-Stuy”. So, to answer your question, as long as your tenant has a modicum of street smarts he/she should be fine. That’s a great area, new restaurants and bars seem like they’re opening every day, and it’s a great time to be moving in.

I’ve been living in Bed Stuy for 5 years and love it, but that said over those 5 years my current building (Jefferson & Lews) has been broken into, multiple parlor floor apts on my block have been robbed in daylight, someone tried to mug me outside the Utica A stop in the middle of the day & on my old block (jefferson & throop) there were two corner shootings in the middle of the day. I think you’re only as safe as you feel & no matter how safe you feel you still have to be street smart.

Is this your first tenant? If not, is the prior tenant available and willing to speak with your prospective tenant? A positive review of the location from someone who lived there recently will provide confidence that one is making a sensible choice.
