Refinishing old parquet floors
My dilemma – I have old parquet floors that are down to 1/4″ or so thick in places. They have clear varnish on them, so are a golden-yellow that I want to refinish much darker. If they are too thin to sand with confidence (as i’ve heard several times), so if i’m stuck with screening them for additional coats rather than sanding them for new stain, what’s the best way to go? Minwax’s tinted “polyshades” is what GC’s floor guy is suggesting, but I havent read good things about the stuff (blotchy, uneven pigment etc) and so I’m wondering what other folk here have done in similar situations…

if your gc’s floor guy is suggesting polyshades, he should be taken out and shot at sunrise. He is not a floor guy. poly shades will not hold up to foot traffic. I also must say, what is wrong with parquet floor 1/4″ of an inch thick? when it was new it was 5/16″. so someone sanded it once? I have the secrets – but am not about to reveal all of them here. screening may be part of the solution but sanding is not off the table. steve
