Looking for Inlaid Wood Floor Restoring/Repair Person

I live in Rutherford, NJ near MetLife Stadium, 8 1/2 miles west of Manhattan. I need the same thing — inlaid floor pieces and repair — on a house that dates back to 1912\. Also the floor needs to be treated, so that it stops breaking. The house originally had steam heating, but the previous owners switched it to forced hot air, and it’s totally drying out the wood. We’ve been living in our house for 15 years, and the floor is deteriorating more and more. We’d like to fix the damage and prevent more. Thank you. — Marian

Hi there, We’re about to begin a gut renovation on a landmark townhouse. We’re taking down the wall between the staircase hall and parlor area – at this point, in both areas there are beautiful inlaid wood floors with decorative borders.  When this main wall comes down, we’ll have to patch this area to make the space between these two areas look natural.  So we’re looking for someone who has 1\. done work like this before… and 2\. knows how to repair/patch old (1880s) wood inlaid floors. Anyone have any recommendations? Also, if any brownstoners have any pictures of similar patches when taking down parlor wall would love to see how it was done!   Thanks much!

We’ve done patches like this many times, mostly in Manhattan townhouses. Slow and precise work but nothing that a great floor installer/carpenter can’t do. I would think the general contractor doing your gut renovation would have someone that can handle this? http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/curated

The guys who did my floor replaced some of the missing greek key areas and I’m confident they could do a larger replacement.  They do have a lotof old wood in their warehouse.   Jose  917-355-7977

this stuff is very easy to do – it just takes patience and attention to detail – the kind needed to do a jig saw puzzle.  what you need is a real floor mechanic – someone who does the wood work.  the reason I tell you this is I have seen repair jobs where the flooring company lets the guys refinishing the floor do this kind of work and floor refinishing and repair are two different animals.  if you call a flooring company, make sure you explain to them that you want every piece to be cut exact and to fit perfectly – no gaps.  Tell them you are going to hold them to this so they do not allow one of their lower skilled workers to do the job and try to pass it off as good.  also, the wood they use should be bought or milled for the purpose and if they mill it themselves (and they may have to if your borders are anything but oak), it should have a low moisture content – like lower than the surrounding floor – my guess would be less than 10%.  What I am saying is the guy should not pull a piece of wood from his shed and then cut it up for your floor as that wood can have a high moisture content and gaps will open as it dries.   Steve
