Rift and Quartered is the way to go. Much more elegent. I would also recommend 4″ or wider. I would also pay up for 6′ and longer boards. Nothing looks cheaper than short and narrow pieces. This is just my two cents of course…..

The rift & quartered sawed look is considered an exotic or high-end flooring choice – since there is quite a difference in pricing. It really depends on your taste and budget. At $1.66 / sf premium it sounds like a good deal. It also sounds as though you really prefer the look, which is most important. Quarter sawn white oak (as opposed to red oak) is a premium product that was used extensively in the high end buildings of prewar Park Avenue and the UWS. The difference between QSWO and plain sawn oak (usually red oak) is like night and day.

The grain runout on most plain sawn is hideous to me, esp oak (it screams rental-grade). I suppose a lot of people don’t care, or can’t exactly tell why one wood looks expensive and the other looks cheap. This is one of the reasons, along with the grade (using the poor center cuts, etc) You could always discard some of the most eggregious boards, but that’s assuming you’re not inundated with huge wavy ovals. When it starts to look like a rotary lathed plywood is when i start to puke. It is more apparent in renos with “floor through” type of designs, there will usually be less rugs and longer stretches for these things to stand out. Smaller rooms (i.e. many original brownstone designs) that will have rugs may not be as big a deal.

$1.66 psf premium doesn’t sound like much.

Thanks. It’s for 1800 sf.

Rift sawn boards are cut at right angles to the tree’s growth rings. Plain sawn boards result from slicing a log lengthwise. Rift sawn boards tend to show grain patterns in straight parallel lines, and the boards are stronger than plain sawn boards. A plain sawn board will show grain patterns sort of like nesting “u’s” or parabolas. A lot more wood is wasted in rift sawing than is in plain sawing, that’s why it costs more. (Actually, quarter sawing is a bit different than rift, where less wood is lost). Is it worth $3K? Depends on how much wood you are buying and how much you care.

For how much square footage??? Quarter sawn IS much more expensive but to do an entire floor with it might not even look that great. Besides, will there be any carpets on top? Maybe just do the edges in quarter sawn. What looks better is an oak gloor with a mahogany or some other dark wood “Greek key” pattern around the edges. I think a whole floor of quarter sawn is probably a waste of money.
