Bathroom Floor Tile - Cannot Match

We ordered tile from eFloors.com for our bathroom renovation. It is a beautiful white and gray Arabescato Carrara Marble Mosiac 1″ Hexagon tile from MS International. Our contractor ran out of tile. All of the original stock that we ordered has been laid and grouted, and we only need 6 more pieces. However, when we ordered the same product number, the color was completely different. eFloors is telling us they need the ‘lot’ number which is not on our receipt, nor do they have it on record. So eFloors cannot help us source these additional tiles. Their only solution is to reorder for the entire job, so we can ensure it is from the same lot. We’ve already spent $1500 on the original tiles, plus $200 on the mismatched tiles (which they won’t take back), and now they are telling us to spend another $1500!?!!? Did we mention that their customer service appalling? We’ve spoken to 5 different managers and not one can help us. If you are thinking of using them – RECONSIDER! We’ve gone to a couple of tile stores with the original sample, however they were not able to match it. Any other help/advice (aside from replacing the whole floor) would be much appreciated. You can try out for the designing of the part left for tiling, make an innovative design, or else you can also use a carpet or rug to cover the area.

Just for general information remember the following. Today I was at the tile warehouse, looking in the back to see if they have any more cases of a tile that I have 5 cases left over from the last bath we did. I brought the label off the cartons we have, to see if they had any of that lot (bought 3 months ago) I was able to find two additional cases with a different but similar lot number, but much different that the current stock. Bear in mind ( and these are white tiles) that their are dye lots and calibers. Dye is self-explanatory, but caliber is the physical size of the tiles. The color and look may match, but a different batch with the same dye may not line up because they came out of the kiln different length. When I have different calibers, I try to lay out a running pattern that pattern avoids 4 tiles meeting in one place. Order extra, and find out how much more of the same lot they have in case you need more during install.

For those ordering tile on the internet: The cost and risk of shipping heavy materials long distance may not be worth the savings compared to ordering from a local showroom with a local warehouse. For those ordering natural materials like marble, consider increasing the margin of waste from the normal 10 % to about 12.5 %. A skilled tile setter may only need a 5 % margin for waste, but it depends on a few factors, one of which is variations in natural stone. For those who are saving money: High quality porcelain comes in many really wonderful textures, patterns and colors. It is not only practical but compatible with other high quality materials, relatively inexpensive and very consistent.

Don’t worry! Send a sample to Restoration Tile of Arkansas and they will match it precisely. Costs about $11 per tile and takes about five weeks, but worth it. Also, assuming the area with the missing tile is a flat field, you can easily do this yourself — or maybe your contractor will still be around to take care of it. Maybe just accept it won’t be the design you intended? I could see removing a few of the laid pieces and inserting the different colored pieces here and there. Maybe even getting something strikingly different so it looks planned?
