traditional window and door color schemes

This may sound silly. We have black 4×4 windows that look great on a brick townhouse. We’re thinking about painting our door red and the trim around the door white. Should the door trim always match the window trim? We’ve played around in photoshop with making it white vs black and we’re afraid the black trim might be a bit too overbearning… The white looks good but I wasn’t sure if we’d be wearing a navy jacket with black pants and white shoes after labor day…

Wow, either of these suggestons solves your problem very nicely. Likely because neither black nor white around your new red front door is the right choice, hence your hesitation and your question here.  I get that your black window trim looks great with the brick, it is a nice look.  If you are stuck on the red door, see if you like it with red trim, as in suggestion number 2 above.  I’m not sure you will like that.  If not, see if a darker color, slightly more toned down than something as bright as red, and more toned down than a color that pops, looks good with the trim painted the same color as the door – I think you might like that better.  Also consider a black door with black trim.  Whatever you use, maybe you can work the red you want in there in some other way  –  door or stoop decorations, plants with red (flowers, leaves, or berries). If you don’t like those options, try what suggestion #1 suggested.  That sounds like a really great look.  If you don’t want to change the black windows, find a door color that looks better with the trim around it painted black (better than the red, which you obviously are hesitant about when surrounded by black trim.) The best way to get the idea you like is to look at houses (and pictures of houses) with a brick color somewhat similar to yours.  What you like will jump out at you.  Yes, you will have to do a lot of looking….

I would paint the door trim the same color as the door – and do a fun color that pops.

Why don’t you use this opportunity to choose a real color, not black or white (boring.) I just replaced my parlor window with cabot blue (a little dull but a lot better than the previous bronze), matching my door trim and orange door. I’d go with wilder colors myself if I had the guts. btw, there’s no such thing as ‘should’ in decorating.
