repainting brownstone facade

There should be a photo in the landmarks archives from the designation report. If the designation was in 2007 I’ll bet it’s color. Ask the preservation rep if they can provide it, if not you may have to file form or freedom of information type request, but you should be able to get it.

That said, if it was pink in 2011, it was probably pink in 2007. If it was pink in 2007, tell your preservationist you’re going to be forced to paint it pink unless they can clear you to paint it another color. I think if you kiss up a little and make it clear there’s no budget for a new facade, they will work with you.

Hey, I have a brownstone in a non landmarked district that has since been painted white. I think the original stone is to damaged to remove the paint, so I was going to repaint it with a brownstone colored paint. I cant seem to figure out what paint to use and the exact color to use that most similarly represents a brownstone. I have seen a lot of painted brownstones that I have to take a second look to see if it was painting or its the original stone. any help with this would be great.

Thank you

I don’t understand why people want to do work that looks bad after 5 years.
Brownstone is a porous sandstone – it is not a good base for painting over.

Make sure you use masonry paint, not just regular exterior paint. Also make sure the surface is properly prepped. We just finish stripping our façade of years and years of poorly applied paint. Improperly painted brownstone can trap water and end up deteriorating the stone further.

Half of the brownstones n crown heights and bed study have been painted and a good bunch of this look great, some you have to give a second look to see if it’s he original sandstone or has been repainted. But I read on another forum here that stripping paint is not a great idea, as usually it’s a sign that the facade (original sandstone) is really damaged

Anyone remember the Pepto Bismol pink house in Park Slope? Loved that house!

As far as I know no permit is needed if it’s painted already as long as you match the color.

LPC Guidebook
When Is an LPC Permit Not Required?
Repainting a building’s exterior or architectural feature a color that matches the existing color.

I wasn’t going to say anything Bob Marvin! In my mind it didn’t need to be said 🙂

You’d technically have to prove it was pink on the landmarks designation date, which might not be easy to do.

ONLY if the OP wanted to repaint it pink, but they made it clear that they did not.

Right, but the brownstone job is going to be expensive, so painting it pink might actually be an option that gets considered.

If you don’t need a permit can’t you just go ahead and paint. Who is going to know and if anyone does complain, I think you have a good case to ask for forgiveness.
