Recommendation for terra cotta restoration/repair on facade
There are specialty contractors – if not in the super specific field of terra cotta tiles, then in restoration of historic materials. Along with Friends of Terra Cotta, you could also try the New York Landmarks Conservancy, a non-profit that offers Technical Assistance.

Can anyone recommend a firm(s) with experience with or knowledge of restoration/repair to terra cotta tiles on a brownstone facade? Don’t expect there to be a “specialist” but any contractors who have done work on brownstone facades with them perhaps? It would be great to get a few referrals so that we can get different quotes. Thanks!

There are specialists. For instance the facade of BAM or the Prospect Park Boat House were restored by specialists. Terra Cotta is a reliable and long-lasting material still in production. I read the AT&T building next to the WTC survived because of terra cotta fire proofing, whereas the modern insulation in the other buildings was the reason they fell. For terra cotta facades in recently constructed buildings see the BNY building near Atlantic and Flatbush and Pratt building on Myrtle, both in Brooklyn. I am not an exterior tile setter so I won’t even look at this, but perhaps another tile setter will take this on, or try looking for a terra cotta conservator in Period Homes Magazine on line.

I would think that the people at **Friends of Terra Cotta** www.preserve.org/fotc/ would be able to give you some leads.

I would check the directory under facade repair. There are lots of specialists there.
