Hooking up an outdoor gas lamp

We have an outdoor gas lamp in our front garden that was disconnected when we started renovations a few years ago, and has never been reattached. Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate on what it would cost to hook it up again. We were told it had to be plumbed into the gas meter, and that was a big cost, but is it? And can it not just take a tap from a pipe that is already attached to the meter?

Once there’s gas going to the light I can’t imagine that it’s any more difficult to get going than a propane camping lantern. I think the mantels for these lanterns have threaded fittings, but I’d bet that tie-on Coleman-type mantels would work in a pinch. I wish I had one; I just missed a mass purchase of gas lights in my neighborhood a few months before I bought my house in 1974 and never got around to buying one individually [it’s only been 41 years?I move slowly 🙂 ]

Yup. Just call a licensed plumber who does a lot of gas piping to fix. Should be a few hundred dollars (at least that’s what they charged us to disconnect ours.) But to get the gas lamp working again is another matter. The person Arkady mentions above is the only person I’ve heard of who does that. Though maybe some nearby homeowners with working gas lamps could help as well.

What master plumber said. And it can’t be “tapped” in the sense that you might tap your refrigerator ice maker water supply into an existing pipe with a saddle connection. Depending upon whether or not the entire buried underground pipe to the lamp needs to be replaced or not maybe only a couple hundred bucks.

I’m a plumber and it’s a gas appliance like all others. The gas to be metered, that’s all. Take the connection from an existing branch of piping.

I am not a plumber, but that does not make sense. everything in this house is tapped of the line that comes out of the gas meter. how else could it be done?
