Corrugated Metal Roofing

Hi I saw that many houses in Europe use this material for roofing and also as siding. I wonder why this is not being done here as well. It seems like it has many advantages over other types of roofs – Newer technologies for metal allow for almost 100% rust free panels, they last a minimum of 50 years, quick to install, almost no seams, less expensive and requires no maintanance, light weight…. Any thoughts?

bkmatthew – In Iceland they only use this type of roofs and they get much more snow than us so I guess it is a good application. Thanks for you input about the slope.

I lived in a house in Australia for many years with a low slope (about 6 degrees) corrugated metal roof. It never leaked. Not sure how they would stand up to the heavy snows we get in New York. I must say the tar paper roofing that is very common in NY seems to me to be a very short-lived application.

I love the sound of rain on a tin roof, but most people do not like the look and think of it as trailer park.  You cannot install it on a low slope roof as it will leak.  Siding is another matter.

As siding or as roofing? You sure it can’t be used on flat roofs?

Won’t work on flat roofs, which are mostly what we have here. Very industrial look to it, not so much for brownstone Brooklyn residential, unless your building modern/retro.  That said, I will be using it on two of my warehouses primarily for that 40’s 50’s cool industrial look.
