Best way to repaint cast-iron on stoop?

Our cast iron stoop newel posts, railings, etc. and our front-yard fence/ gate are all peeling and need to be repainted.  I was planning on just scraping and re-painting everything, however a friend told me that she had all of her stoop cast iron and her fence actually REMOVED, then stripped, repainted and re-attached by a local iron works company. Is my friend insane, or do people actually do that??  If the latter (and you’ve done it), what iron works company or contractor did you use?  What is the ballpark price?  I can only imagine that intentionally removing and then re-attaching those many-hundreds-of-pounds newel posts would cost a fortune, not to mention the stripping/ painting part. Thanks!

Don’t touch it if it aint broken…  Scrape and paint will do.. Many times the railings and newel posts, especially the more substantial ones you find on fancy brownstones have been repaired incorrectly over the years with cement or by wrapping wire around loose parts.   The layers of paint are all that are holding the pieces together.  Missing parts can (sometimes) be ordered through iron works catalogs.

Just like someone mentioned, if no repairs are required then no need to remove. Even if minor repairs are needed they can be done at the site (there are special cast iron patching compounds). Most cast iron in the Landmark district is being scraped, primed (one coat) and painted (2 coats) with one of several specialty coatings made by Tnemec. They come with a price (approximately $95/gal) but you will have a lasting effect. Believe me, there is paint, and then there is paint.

If it’s damaged or something that sort of makes sense. Otherwise, I can’t see any need for it. Just scrape it, prime it and paint it. Repeat.

I **did** ask her, via email, and she hasn’t gotten back to me yet.  [Full details: she and I had this conversation a year ago, when I first began contemplating repainting. She has since moved out of the country and we’ve fallen out of touch.  I just didn’t want to put all that in my post…]   My general question to the community still stands: whether or not other people have had their newel posts removed for stripping, or is that an unusual/ unnecessary thing to do?
