PLP Electric Account

My two family house has three separate electric meters.  There are two residential accouts for the two apartments and one small commerical account (PLP) for the “public space”.  Coned says the PLP is required for public hallways in a multi unit building, however, the way the house is set up and the way it was wired, the only area of the house actually powered on the PLP account is the Cellar, which is not “public”.  The monthly bill isn’t that much and the load is very small, but I don’t see the point in paying a separate delivery charge for service that can be combined with the Owner’s account. Has anyone had a similar setup?  I’d like to get rid of the PLP meter and combine the service.

Thanks for the comments.  I figured there was no good reason that they couldn’t be separated, but the person I spoke to at Coned insisted that it was not possible to get rid of it.  I can see the potential tax benefit, but I’m not keen on paying a delivery charge at a commercial rate for an electric service that uses such a minimal load.  The charge for the actual usage is like .05% of the delivery charge.  Seems like a waste to me.

a licensed electrician should be able to get rid of the pLp for you, But keep in mind there are benefits to having a pLp. tax wise that is. I can give you the name of my electrician, he did work like this for me in the past. Ecoslivings@gmail.com

I have a 3 family that has a PLP meter for the hallway lights.  I had a con-ed techinician recommend that, as long as I lived in the home myself, I move the hallway lights to my meter and cancel the PLP.  If I ever move out and rent the entire house that meter would need to be enabled again to avoid the infamous shared meter condition.  Potentially saves a good amount of money over the long term.  Hope this helps.

Our 3-family did not have a PLP, and when we renovated (incl all new elec) we kept it just 3 meters.  We have a separate breaker box for public areas, but it’s connected to our apt meter.  We had no problems with Con-Ed.  However during our final electrical inspection the DOB inspector first told us that a PLP was required, but made some calls and then said it was acceptable as the work was part of an Alt-2 rather than an Alt-1.  YMMV.
