Need help: boiler problem, maybe an electrical issue

So, our first fun as new home owners: our boiler isn’t working. It was working when we bought the place a few weeks ago, but meanwhile our general contract thinks one of his guys may have cut the wire from the thermostat to the boiler. He’s been promising to get an electrician in for a week to fix it, but he’s flaking, and we moved in last night, and it’s freezing, so we are taking matters into our own hands. We’re not sure if we need a boiler guy or an electrician. Recommendations or referals for either would be appreciated.

When we were renovating, our electricians cut the electrical to the boiler because they were rewiring the entire house. As soon as we realized what had happened, the electricians fixed it immediately. Plumbers who install heating systems also employ electricians who can fix this. Anyway, if you are rewiring your house, the people who are doing the rewiring should be able to fix this easily and quickly.

It would be a shame if a thermostat wire is keeping you from getting heat.  Thermostat wires are low-voltage and generally safe to handle even when energized.  They connect to your boiler control and then, depending on your set up, to an external control box, a circulator, and ultimately back to your thermostat.  Usually a thermostat wire consists of 2 thin wires.  You might be able to find and trace them and see if they are cut or disconnected.  And you might be able to see clearly where they should be connected on the boiiler and then reconnect or splice them back together until they can be permanently replaced etc.  If they seem to be connected, you can do a simple test by removing the two thermostat wires from your boiler and, if you can find a piece of thermostat wire just bare the two ends and stick one end in one of the thermostat wire connections on your boiiler and the other end in the other spot.  This effectively jumps your thermostat is if the boiiler then fires up, you have identified the problem as either a broken or cut thermostat wire, or a bad thermostat. Then you can just run it that way until the house warms up.  Before the safety police on this site start their tantrums, let me just say I am not suggesting anyone start rewiring their boilers, and if you are not sure if it is a thin guage thermostat wire versus a 120 volt wire, then obviously don’t touch it.  But every homeowner should be familiar with how these things work and be able to fix simple things in a pinch, in my opinion.

If its oil fired, I’d call your oil supplier. If gas, start with your plumber (or a referral from national grid). In any case, there are a number of heating contractors on this forum. If you wait a little while, you’re sure do get more expert advice.
