Licensed Electrician

How do I check the credentials of an electrician?  I want to make sure the guy is legit with no bad history. How do I check the GC?

http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/LicenseTypeServlet?vlfirst=Y I tried to post a link above, if it does not appear, go to nyc.gov, a list of agencies appears, select Buildings, scroll down to License Check.  There you will find electricians, plumbers, and many more.  If you don’t find your guy right away, try the personal name or the company name, change the spacing and punctuation in the company name a few times to be sure.  Or, just search on the license number if he gave it to you. I am not registered as a GC with the DOB.  I am a licensed by the Dept of Consumer Affairs as a Home Improvement Contractor, but I have a tracking number from the DOB for permit purposes.  A note prompted me to check my own status with the DOB, and I see I need to update them.  Thanks. All this is confusing for home owner and small business alike.  But it is good of you to ask.  I would hope others seeking work on their home would hire licensed trades and check that a license is legit with the city.  Many private services exist to make money from recommending contractors, often paid by the contractors for the recommendations, but the city does it as a part of normal business and is disinterested.

Ask him for his license number (it should be proudly displayed on the side of his truck, on his business card, or on his website, but if not, just ask for it) then go to Dept of Consummer Affairs instant license check: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/licenses/license_check.shtml  If he gives you excuses like “I need to see the job first” or “My partner with my other company has the license” then you are dealing with someone you don’t want to do business with.
