Electrician/Detective

I need to find somone with good detective skills who can figure out the cable, telephone, and ethernet wiring in my house, and make corrections. The wiring was mostly done 20 years ago by a licensed electrician, but the cable runs were done by a handyman 10 years ago. Here are the problems I face: 1.) The Time-Warner cable/internet signal is fine on the outside of my house, but somewhere between the exterior wiring box and my third floor it loses its juice. We can’t figure out exactly how it gets into our house, where it goes, and how it gets to the third floor. We want to run a new cable into the house and make sure its done correctlt to reach our three cable boxes. 2.) The telephone line supports two phones: a land line and a voip phone. We have loose wires runing all over the house and want to clean them up. We’ve learned that removing even one innocent looking, seemingly dead wire will kill the system. We want to clean up ths mess. 3.) We have Cat5 wiring that seems to be fine. Any options for upgrading it to Cat6? Can anyone recommend an electrician who can help us with this job? TIA, Bill

My primary concern is the cable TV/internet run. I’m hoping to by-pass what I think is a bad segment on the second floor and go right to our top floor (where I think the segment is good) by bringing the external cable in through the third floor rather than the second floor. I need someone with testing equipment and a good detective sense to see if that’s an option.

Are you prepared to have your walls opened up all over your house?  The wiring work is easy but the access is the messy part.  I had similar problems – the cable run had old barrel connectors and splitters in the walls.  Old versions of those kill the new digital signals and rather than open the walls I actually had a second exterior run done to the other side of the house.  Looks ugly but works for now. Similarly the phone wires were all in a big series but used cat5.  Works fine for phones but to “upgrade” to data I need to forget about those cables and start over since every drop needs a dedicated run to a central patch panel. I use wireless instead. What difference does cat6 mean for you?  Cat5 is more than enough for residential data.
