Sagging Plaster Molding
We removed our drop ceiling and found an almost intact plaster ceiling with moldings. Sadly, several sections are sagging and our contractor wants to demo the whole thing. We’d like to restore so does anyone have experience using washers or the like to support and then reattach to the beams? Any afforable recommendations for people who do runs of missing sections? Thanks in advance.

I just used a terrific Master Plasterworker named Alex Livanov. 201-248-2861 His website is www.decorplasterwork.com He restored my sagging ceiling in the living room and saved the original medallion. In my didning room I needed a whole new ceiling as the damaged and missing ceiling had been covered up by a dropped ceiling. He replastered the whole thing and produced beautiful new plaster cove moldings on-site.

Hi, Anthony the Mason, 347 307 4725 has restored and blend matched the sculptures on the front entrance of the building facade. He’s very talented and his price is quite reasonable. Good Luck!

Call Fitz. You can find him by searching the forum. Father/Son team- they did our ceiling which was found also under a drop ceiling, and was similarly pathwork. It looks great, and has held up nicely for 4 years since- They matched the broken molding sections and shored up the whole thing. He was reasonably priced.

I do this kind of work all the time. However, I’m booked up for the next month. I’m not sure if you’re in a rush to get this done or not? You can see examples of my work at RickLaddBrooklyn.com

Yes, you can fix this. Reattach plaster to lathe, then skim coat three times, using plasterweld (the pink stuff) and mesh on the first layer. The mesh prevents fine cracks. There are several recommendations on this site for plasterers who can fill in missing bits. Obviously anyone who can do that can obviously reattach the ceiling and skim coat as well. The skilled plasterers will charge more than a regular skilled drywall person (but the latter can’t fill in the missing bits).

Agree, do not demo. While not a whole ceiing, I shored up a large medallion with fender washers and screws once. Did it all by myself too, including finish, but then I’m not restoration-level picky.

Yes you can fix this. Ceiling buttons every 16 inches (might as well do the whole ceiling). Then paint primer or plasterweld. Next comes fiberglass mesh and finally you skim coat. Of course it is easier to knock it all down and put up sheetrock but you will feel better doing it right. The only step that requires skilled labor is the skim coat so you can do the rest yourself. Putting in the ceiling buttons is very rewarding as you see your ceiling rise up and become flush a little at a time.
