Recommendation for Prates Plastering

As someone who used a lot of Brownstoner recommendations during our recent renovation, I am finally getting around to posting a few of my own. Here’s the first: We are very happy we hired Junior (Willian) Prates to plaster our brownstone garden apartment last summer. His price for installing new blueboard and plaster veneer came in less than standard drywall with patch & basic skim, so we ended up having him do the entire apartment (including ceilings above which his crew added insulation and soundproofing board as well!) and are VERY happy with the work. He also plaster veneered over existing plaster which had been directly applied to brick walls, and over brick itself in some places. It’s been 6 months or so now and the plaster is still like new, despite the rest of the apartment “settling” a little after the reno. Junior came back to patch some large holes we made when we thought we might add speakers in the living room ceiling, and once painted, you absolutely can’t tell they were ever there.  Those of you who have seen an nice plaster job will understand this, but I honestly think the walls and ceiling are some of the most beautiful parts of our apartment. I highly recommend him for plaster work. It’s his specialty and he’s fast, clean and highly concerned with your satisfaction of his work. His quote will be accurate. If it’s a big job, don’t be surprised if he occasionally needs a day off in between to rest his arm (watch him do it, you’ll understand why). We also had he and his crew do some other construction and finish work (trim, tile, etc) which ultimately turned out nicely but was a bit “messy” in terms of project management. I have a bit of experience with renovations so I was able to provide the oversight necessary.  I would hire him again, but with some specific project management requirements which I’d be happy to share with anyone who is considering using him for work beyond plaster.  A note: Junior speaks and understands English well, and is easy to talk to in person. He has more trouble with his written English so any email or contract correspondence will go through his wife Aida who has impeccable English and is extremely pleasant and patient.  I think they make a very good team. Original poster here. Yes this is the same company, but I did not have the same experience. I saw this post too (but also the multiple positive posts about him) and checked his references before hiring him. Anyone considering him (or any other tradesperson for that matter) should do the same. Note that Junior’s specialty is plaster, not general construction or other finish work. He can do those and they can come out nicely but he is newer to those areas of work so getting there wasn’t as easy as the plaster was. Again, happy to discuss the particulars of this and my recommendations with anyone considering him. My email is in the original post above.
