Mailslot and USPS

Hi, I just moved into a brownstone we renovated from a 3 family to a single family. As part of our renovation we installed a mailslot in the parlor doors (up steps) that the USPS is refusing to use. They say we have to install a mailbox on the ground floor. Looking at regulations, we are allowed to move the point of delivery but mailslots are supposed to be 30″ high and ours is near the ground. Is it worth it to try to push USPS to use the mailslot or should we just accept defeat and install a mailbox? Has anyone experienced anything similar? I really want to use our mailslot (we cut a hole in our door!). Thank you!

Just put in a mailbox, not worth trying to make USPS do something they dont want to. You won’t win anyway. Trust me as I have battled them on several things like this before.

Like mrohrmann said. Consider yourself lucky you’re getting delivery at all. And, depending upon which post office is closest, have fun dealing with them if you ever have to pick something up, assuming they left a proper notice at all.

USPS service in Brooklyn is absolutely terrible. If you could install a puddle (instead of a mailbox) that would probably work best, since certain mail carriers seem to prefer to toss mail in puddles rather than the mailbox provided. Or maybe that’s just our special mail carrier…

Talk to your regular carrier. You’ll still get it under the stoop when there are substitutes working but most will accommodate you.

“should we just accept defeat”? (waaahhh!!!) “I really want to use our mailslot (we cut a hole in our door!).” (waaahhh!!!) Yes, accept defeat and be grateful for the cheap lesson in looking before you leap. btw, we’ve had some great letter carriers and some truly miserable ones. No matter who the carrier, we don’t make them bend over to deliver through a precious mail slot.

Well said ventilated. And while one could possibly install a 30″ high mail slot at the parlor level, if the post office expressed a preference for a ground floor mailbox, since it is a single family anyway, why make the carrier climb the stairs to deliver?
