Brownstone Conversion - changing C of O

So you have a one family residence, and would like to divide it into two separate apartments. An architect would draw up the plans of the existing house, draw plans that show the changes to create a two-family residence. You approve the plans, they get filed with the Building Department as an Alteration type 1 (change of use and egress). You wait. Approval will likely take a couple of months. In the meantime you price out the job with a few contractors. DOB grants approval, the contractor pulls the permit, completes the work. At the end of the job there is a final inspection, and once it passes, you get a new Certificate of Occupancy showing a two family residence. I hope this is helpful. Ula Bochinska, www.bostudio.us
