Hi My name is Jamal Bahair. I have been doing construction work for 20 years now and I’m very familiar with work such as you explained. I would like to install a range hood that vents outside. The building is a four-floor walk-up, without an air shaft in the middle. The stove is against the party wall, roughly fifteen feet from the back of the building. I would like to run a duct vertically into the drop ceiling, turn 90 degrees, and then run straight out the back. Does anybody have advice on the ins and outs of ventilation or have a recommendation of someone with this type of expertise? Thanks.

I had to do something similar & was told by a guy who does restaurant exhaust systems that I should put in an auxiliary fan as close to the outside vent as possible. The fan goes in the duct & helps to draw the air from the hood. The hood fan pushes air which is evidently not as efficient as pulling it.

I can tell you that what you are proposing definitely works, but in their infinite wisdom, is forbidden by , who else… DOB. Kitchen vents must go straight up to go out, or at lest not across. If you are doing it anyway, and you get insufficient performance, in line fans work excellently. We get ours from pexsupply.com. Fifteen twenty foot run, I wouldn’t bother. I would switch it separately, rather than rely on on-board sensor (the way they usually work).
