The lincrusta on the wall lining our stairway is starting to crack in one place. It’s made it 120 years without cracking. On the opposite side of the wall where it is cracking is the niehgbor’s chiney flue. I suspect that that has something to do with it. Anyone have any guess as to what may have changed in there to cause the added heat? Thanks, SWR

Either water is getting in from the top or they are having fires without having relined the chimney or there may be a blockage at the top.  Ask them if they have changed the usage or done anything at the top.  If it was supposed to be sealed off at the top it may be that there’s a leak and moisture is getting in.
