lowering appliances down into the basement
We’re thinking about buying a freezer for our basement, and wondering whether we should limit ourselves to the width of the basement staircase, or if it’s not totally insane to lower such an appliance down through the hatch in the front yard. I’m pretty sure that would kick us up into the next larger size range… but will we end up killing someone in the process? Has anyone done this safely? Would the freezer delivery people think I was nutso if I asked them about this?

We did this when we bought a new washer/dryer. There’s a guy at PC Richards on Atlantic Ave who specializes in these types of deliveries. Talk to him.

This is done all the time for restaurants that often have pantry/cold storage in the basement. As brucef says, go slow. You may be better off contacting someone in restaurant supply rather than Lowes/HDepot appliance delivery.

We have done this many times. We lowered a Buderus Indirect Tank that was surprisingly fat and heavy. Build a sturdy sling using (2) decent lines NOT clothesline, preferably braided nylon. If you have a fire escape or deck above that can support a come-a-long fine, or you will have to build a temporary frame. Do not try to lower this by hand, but with pulley or cable hoist, and a few hands to gently guide, you should be fine. Delivery folks would not be a good choice. I have had them insist they knew what they were doing and drop a heavy fridge and almost kill themselves. The idea is to avoid over confidence and work slowly.
