This has been a chronic problem since the conversion. I know I have brought it up and so have others. Very frustrating that it hasn’t been corrected. It renders the archives virtually useless.

When I started reading Brownstoner in 2007, the focus was on renovation and the Forum was a great resource for the online community. I found many of the tradespeople I subsequently used, on this site. The focus of Brownstoner has shifted to selling real estate, hence the not so subtle neglect/disdain of the forum. It’s a shame, and not such a smart business move, either. This community is loyal and passionate (and eventually people move and buy real estate), so to ignore it is to spit into the well you drink out of, Mr. B.

Readers may not like it, but it is likely not a bad business move. This site seems to have followed a way to financial success – build a following of a lot of eyeballs with (lots of reader generated) content in additional to blog posts, sell those eyeballs to advertisers, drawing in a lot or revenue through advertising. Probably the idea all along…people put in all the work to make money, usually.

I saved names of contractors I thought might be useful but I really regret not being able to look back for more general information. I’d guess on average of once a week I would like to look up details from some experts.

Got to agree. Disheartening… After all Brownstoner was built on the backs of reader generated content. Everything from reposting other bloggers work and submitted photography to breaking news and insider scoops came from readers. I miss the brave souls who would post personal stories about their renovations the most! The loss of the comments is an insult to those who took the time over many years to answer questions. Master Plumber, DIBS, Arkady among many others MADE the archives. I have used the archives to make decisions many times… Heck I’m about to hire a contractor based on multiple readers positive comments. Great Loss Fix this.

It’s not just a problem with the archived posts, I would say users of the forum is not all that active anymore. Is it just my imagination? Seems to me that we lost lots of people who would post often.

Rick, it absolutely does seem as though overall posting activity is down. I have felt that for quite a while, glad to hear it’s not my imagination. What seems to be echoed here is that the overall quality and helpfulness of the site has headed south. I too was using this site as a research and resource tool to find helpful information and it just simply is not as helpful as it was just a year ago.There are definitely technical issues that are playing into this, but perhaps it is also a shift in the general audience type that has contributed to that feeling many of us are experiencing. The former should be a much easier fix and the later may change once the former is corrected!

What technology one chooses to put money into making work IS a business decision. The technology to link to the real estate listing on this site from a post, and from there to the listing on the brokers’ site, works flawlessly.

Yes, there does seem to be far less activity on the forum now, and also fewer posts in the main Brooklyn section. It’s also much more rah-rah, now, whereas in the past there was a somewhat higher proportion of critical comment on development. Guess this is just a sign of its success and of the times in general. It’s a shame, because it used to be a lot more informative and lively. Oh & the Queens section really needs some work.

We had another Forum post about this recently. Our tech people are working on a fix to recover the archived responses. They have been working on it for two or three weeks now. The formatting of the Forum changed, and the responses were lost, when we decided to stop using the custom WordPress integration and went with straight WordPress, which is what we are using now. We did this because of unanimous opinion that we should, because people were having trouble logging on and commenting. Very sorry about the archived comments.

Hi Everyone, Coming late to this thread but sorry to hear about all the frustration. First of all, just want to assure you that no comments have been lost. Just checked with the folks at BlankSlate and figured out the story. As you may recall, there were two iterations of the Forum–the old one from the Movable Type days and then the BlankSlate one from the 2011-2012 era. There were some issues migrating the old MT stuff to the current WordPress platform and there have been enough other things to deal with that some of the old comments, as you’ve all noted, are not on the current site. Contrary to some of the conspiracy theorists, this has nothing to do with not caring about the Forum. This issue has now been prioritized and hopefully should be rectified in the near future. Question was raised whether “mission” of forum/website has changed. With the increase in RE prices, new buyers have become mostly condo/apt rather than houses. Consequently, construction decisions are often fait accompli or handled by others. Years ago, the focus was more the “gentleman” hobbyist, concerned more with restoration and preservation. There was always the investment coonsideration, but polite folk don’t talk about things like that. I have learned a lot over the years from the forum, so I have always tried to share my various narrow areas of expertise. I mostly miss the snarky, holier than thou comments.
