Oil to gas conversion
We pay $230 a month for heat and hot water for a 2700 sq ft two family and we have oil. Our neighbor with gas pays about the same. As long as oil prices are relatively low, it seems your costs won’t go down much if you switch. OTOH if your boiler needs to be replaced, that would be the time to do it if you are going to. I got quotes of $12,000 to switch vs. $6,000 for a new boiler on the same system 10 years ago.

We bought a brownstone about two years ago with oil heating and are starting to think about whether/when we should convert to gas. Our heating costs last year were about $1,900 for a 2,400 square foot brownstone. We already have gas hookups for our hot water and stove. Does anyone have experience going through an oil to gas conversion? I’m curious about the cost of conversion as well as the impact to annual heating costs. Also, very happy to hear recommendations as I’m not quite sure where to start and whom to call. Thanks!

the current problem with oil to gas conversions is the moratorium on new gas service that NatGrid has put in place to pressure the state into allowing a new pipeline… it has made installation of new service slow to nonexistant… Check with whoever gives you an estimate about the size of your current service, or it can drag out endlessly

If you can’t convert, for whatever reason, just make sure your boiler and the connected system of piping and radiators is performing at their best. Pressure settings, piping configuration, air vents, etc…when these things are compromised the efficiency suffers and fuel costs rise no matter which fuel you’re using. Consultations and complete system evaluations are pretty much all I do anymore: www.72Fmechanical.com
