It’s typically to your benefit to use a firm recommended by the architect or some else on your project team. You can always find a less expensive engineer or consultant, but the ‘cheapest’ option will usually ends up being more of a liability than an asset – and more costly in the long run.

You’re right, but I just feel as if the proposals from the architect recommended engineers are coming in with a high fee. I just believe there are qualified engineers out there who would come in a LOT less than what I have been seeing.

Try and work with the ones your architect like. They already have a relationship. The few times I had engineers to work with that came outside of whom I was aquainted with, usually did not work out well.
