Slanted brownstone/uneven settling/fix?

Hi there, we are looking to buy a brownstone. On one side of it is a row of brownstones, on the other is a much larger institutional structure. Because the brownstone row side has settled a lot more than the institutional side, the brownstone is quite crooked (probably 20-30 degrees). Is there a way to correct such a problem? Does such a problem get worse/cause further problems down the road? We are going to put in a bid pending an favorable engineers report, but wondering if anyone on the site has a shorthand answer to this question? (And a ballpark cost estimate if possible). OK, I am not an engineer–clearly. My degrees are way off, but I just spoke with a professional familiar with this house and they said it is about a 5 or 6 inch difference between one side and the other, so I am not sure what the degrees would be in that case :). This was a facade restoration professional, who said, as far as he knows, they can’t jack up the building to make it even (but that I should ask an engineer), but that they can re-do the facade to make the house appear flush…. any other advice (or refs for engineers) would be greatly appreciated. If you are talking about the house on Garfield, I’d be a lot more concerned about the two tenant situation on the top floor: one rent controlled, one tenant for life written into the deed, and water. Having said that, and if it’s not the same house, I’d call in the very top facade people and, along with engineers, get their opinion: Adami, Edson, etc. Don’t mess around with mid level – go right to the top, whether you plan to hire them or not, and see what they say.

it’s not possible to fix? you can’t jack the building up in any way? sigh.
