How to make two rooms out of one long and narrow bedroom
Hi, I am looking for advice on how to split up a bedroom in our apartment. We are trying to divide the room to make a bedroom my 2 year old daughter and then make a seperate room for my husband to write in (the second room would not have any windows). The lenth of the room is 21 feet (which currently includes a 4 foot closet) and the width is approx 9 feet 6 inches and where you walk is is only about 7 and a half feet wide. We are not sure if we want to keep the closet as it is or maybe cut it in half and possibly put a closet in my daughters room. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Built in bookcases with a translucent glass divider above to let light into the windowless new room. (I would think it would be depressing to write in a room with no windows). You cannot use the new windowless room as a bedroom legally. At 7 1/2′ replace the closet with a freestanding armoire. Or; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2Y7oo3iB40

I would tend to agree with something less permanent. Book cases work well if you have books to go in them. You may also want to look at air circulation as putting up a wall will change the way air flows through the home. One bedroom or the other may get hot and stuffy.

we just put in a wall for $1500 with Transcend that’s scribed to plaster ceiling so it can be removed one day. I’d also say consider two year old sleeping in the inside room without windows and husband getting windows while he works. though I think the interior room would not be a legal bedroom.

You have different options to divide a room – if you’re still deciding on the layout, you could go with a “temporary” divider such as bookcases. check out these options: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/top-ten-room-di-21706 If you need a quiet space for your husband to write, then putting up a drywall might be a better solution. Also, since you have limited space, it might be a good idea to remove the closet, especially since it’s not needed in the study, and rebuild it in your daughter’s room. If you need a general contractor, take a look at http://www.totalhousehold.com
