Since most split air handlers have the suction side along the bottom edge and the flow side on top, you *may* be able to box it in with two openings which would keep the flows separated. Any mixing of air  will severely degrade perfomance. A grill on the suction side won’t be too bad, but one on the outflow side will affect performance. I’d say the cover will look  no better than the exposed unit. Why not replace the unit with an Artcool which kind of looks like a wall hanging (and can be customized?)

Uh, for real?  So people do not break in.  You obviously have never had people break in through your windows.  I have, more than once.  The cut the locks on the gates, or removed lag screws screwed deep into the window frame (while standing on a window sill four flights up.) Bars with no gates that open in them are sooo much safer.  Fire doesn’t worry me – less frequent, and usually from things one can control (smoking, candles, poor wiring, etc.)

We had same situation two days before we were to close on a house — bank suddenly freaked out regarding bars. Our mortgage broker was able to argue on our behalf and they waived requirement.

We had this problem with Citibank on a refi a few years back.  We held firm, insisting that we didn’t want to remove or modify the steel bars on a rear window of the parlor floor (not in a bedroom). They compromised by insisting we insert a “hold harmless” waiver provision into the terms of the agreement.  We signed off and, to this day, those bars are still in place.  But again, we got them to compromise back when the banks were more willing to compromise just to be able to sell the note. Stiill, I would think it can’t hurt to ask.

Correct some lenders like Chase as well as Citibank will not budge on the bars issues. It’s extremely problematic when you are in a historic district. That said there are lenders that do not care about the bars and I have gotten it done numerous times.

A lender (and insurer) can make any requirements it wants.  Agree to modify the bars or find another lender. This is not a great cost and if you can arrange to add it to the mortgage it will cost just a few dollars per payment.

I’ve seen this situation more than once.I’m curious as to how the window installers explained using a 1×6 in this occasion.The window company  discussed the fact PRIOR that they were not going to finish your windows along these lines ? How do you intend to get your exterior finished?  Has the plasterer said he is going to return the plaster into our jamb after we place the windows into the openings and leave? Does he know whats involved here, Is he aware we are installing a 1×6 jamb. im owner of brownstoner in cobble hills i have renovated everything by myself with help of my coworkers i didnt do any brownstone repair nothing outside the house becouse i had spent alot of money for interior renovation but im planning for next year to hire somebody to rebrownstone the front of my house becouse its cracked and dirty on the back wall im thinking of instaling eifs stucco same as your waterproofer install its the best stucco system becouse it insulate your house and looks great but must be profesionally instaled what i see on your picture there no way to install the eps foam pic (its not ridgid foam) becouse there no way to screw it or no way to use adhesive the spaces between plywood and windows are open and should be covered with plywood or some diffrent wood i dont see any framing there to install plywood i think the best way to do it is to install wide framing to cover it and it should be done before windows are installed its very inportand becouse around windows leaking is always possible if it isnt waterproffed correctly if you have already paid the window istallers and they dont wanna comeback to do it right you should hire some carpenter to remove these windows and build in new framing in opening and install windows again its easy to do if somebody have some experience you should seek for some carpenter he should be done in 1 day and would charge a honest fee.

Dog.. seriously.  and train it (learn how if you’re unsure… i’d say the majority of dog owners have now idea how to actually train one, beyond ute tricks like “sit”.)  I have a sweetheart rottweiler mix and she’s a complete mush as long as a new person is introuced to her by one of her “pack”. She’s even got the right temperment for the neighbors in their yards doesn’t bark at their noises, and generally ignores them while they are in their own property (rotties, especially are patroller type dogs, and “get” property lines if you train them accordingly. )  but…  lets say a gardener drops a tool into our side of the fence and wants to retrieve it – he’d best ring the doorbell.  She actually won’t attack – but she’s cornered more than one intruder (and to her, uninvited entry into the yard or home = intrusion) and the sounds she makes bring to mind Kujo lol.  Anyways – i didn’t mean for this to turn into a brag-about-my-dog fest, but having a good, well trained dog is a GREAT bit of security.  Shouldn’t be the only security – but it goes a long way, and as long as it’s not yappy or makes it otherwise unenjoyable for neighbors to use their own yards – the added measure is often appreciated.

If you have the original windows, I recommend restoring them and using storm windows for energy efficiency that will greatly exceed that of new double-paned windows. Nothing will fit as well, look as good, or last as long as original windows. Our house came with cheap vinyl replacement windows that probably failed three years after they were installed. Replacement windows are extremely expensive. We got quotes of about $8,000 for 15 aluminum windows installed, and $30,000 for a brick-to-brick installation of 15 wood Marvins. We also got an estimate of about $30,000 for a full facade restoration with wood siding and installation of seven wood windows by a contractor who has done two similar facade restorations.
