Shouldn’t take much to install it. Not sure what the relevance is between the window and the brick building… I would do it. Call me at 347-276-6528 Levi SoHoAppliances

adding a window isn’t difficult, but remember, an external wall is likely helping to hold up the roof – so you’ll have to take that into consideration (and have an engineer properly analyze the load to give you proper size restrictions on the opening, and possible headers needing to be installed (all the way down to fottings in the cellar) But first – is it your building?

Router bits make pretty much straight cuts, as you see on baseboard molding. I can’t see the molding in the picture very well, but a router might not be able to handle those cut out parts and scallops. In case anyone is interested, we have some picture moldings with a ribbon and sawtooth design that appears to be made of wood with gesso molded on the top.

If Dyke’s or Adriatic doesn’t have it, your carpenter can have a router bit custom made and can custom mill the wood using the router bit (if this design can be made with a router bit). Otherwise, he or she can make a mold and create the molding out of resin, but that will have to be painted or faux painted. We just had a router bit made for some bead board and we used Atlas Saw & Tool in Spring Grove, Ill. They charged $195 for a fairly simple router bit. It took about four days and they Fed Ex’d it. And they are very nice people and sent us some Christmas candy.

If you look at each component as a separate entity, most of that is available today from companies like Van Dyke’s, and other suppliers of old house goodies. It would not be too difficult for a carpenter to replicate, assuming it will be painted when you are done. Look at Van Dyke Restorer’s, and/or Old House Journal’s advertisers for more sources. http://www.vandykes.com/moldings-trim/c/16/ Even if you are keeping paint on it, you might want to consider stripping the originals, or your 2 layers of paint on the new piece will look very different from the 10 layers on the original.

I was just in a house in Park Slope today with similar molding on the bedroom floors. The house seemed a mixture of styles, including neo-Colonial and Neo-Italian Renaissance. So probably 1880s-1890s, most likely 1890s Queen Anne.

You may already be on your way but here’s another option. “Ducted” mini-split systems (steam_man mentions them too). The apt will look like you have central A/C (little ducts, no wall units). I have this in my house. It is not an easy or cheap solution. But if you can make it work in your space, it can be a good one. It was worth it for me bc I wanted to didn’t want to lose space to the ducts of central A/C, didn’t think central A/C ducting would work with the look of our walls, didn’t want to see the wall units of a ductless split system, didn’t seriously consider the high-velocity system. I think the ducts are unobtrusive enough to work with a traditional brownstone interior (moldings etc). I have 4 inside units (2 in ceilings of tall parlor floor, 2 above closets on lower ceiling ground floor); sufficient room is the key issue. The Daikin system works very well. Whatever system you get, I rec you get an HVAC engineer to properly size the total system, the units and any ducting. You don’t want an installer to just be guessing. http://www.daikin.com/global_ac/products/residential/multi_plus/outline.html As installed in my house: http://www.allrenovationllc.com/all-project-photos?shashin_album_key=9

It’s not very easy to see, and it looks exotic beserk neo-colonial — quite unusual — but probably late 1890s.

Uh, this is fairly useless spam for a Brooklyn row house…

I agree with xistent. In a perfect world, restoring the original windows sounds great. I guess I’d consider it if I lived in San Francisco or London where the weather is so temperate. But single glazed, weights and chains window will never be as efficient as new double glazed, gasketed windows. Also, many people (like us) are replacing ugly aluminum windows that have reached the end of their (short) life span. Our new windows allow much less heat transference than the aluminum ones and are fantastically draft proof. FWIW, I’ve heard that Kolbe is as good as Marvin and significantly less expensive — they’re less well known because they advertize less.

I looked into restoring our original single glazed weight & chain windows and found somebody on this sight who actually encouraged restoration over replacement. After discussing in great detail why I should and could do restoration with the old single glazed windows (along with a storm window since they are single glazed) it was clear that he seemed passionate and detail oriented to do such a job. For months I waited for him to come and give me a quote “when he was finished with current workload” and eventually he just backed out w/o even showing up to quote. From there I tried another reputable restorer and the cost to restore would have exceeded a quality replacement job. Very difficult to find someone who will do that well (depended on how old the windows are) w/o charging quite a lot. You have to keep in mind, old single glazed windows will not perform well like modern windows unless coupled with a storm window (you may already have one) In the end I decided to replace and get Marvin brick to brick for our landmark windows. I hired a contractor that seems very detail oriented and focused on insulating the window pocket well after emoving the old windows. We will be getting our first phase installed in a few weeks. After all the research I did on both options, I feel new is the way to go for operation & effiency.
