Shouldn’t take much to install it. Not sure what the relevance is between the window and the brick building… I would do it. Call me at 347-276-6528 Levi SoHoAppliances

My kinda topic. Dual pane and triple pane windows do not stop much more noise than whatever you have. Add expensive options like laminated glass and maybe it can stop 20% more noise than your current windows. More details can be found at soundproofing101.com. The best noise stopper is adding a window made of laminated glass. It insulates, seals from drafts, and reduces noise. If the recording industry is any indicator – soundproofwindows.com makes the best on the market. I know their recording studio windows and doors are the best in the world. They do make add on windows that work great – my aunt loves them. Cuts energy and totally handles the noise problems she had. She’s in New Jersey, so I know they ship and install the residential stuff locally. They ship the recording industry stuff worldwide.

I just used Vila Window Repair, who had been recommended by a few people on this site. They were reallly great to work with and very reasonably priced…a nice family-run business.

triple pane as mentioned above. There are other options if you do some research. A number of years ago , a buddy of mine won a government contract to install windows in the houses surrounding LI McArthur Airport. The FAA paid for these windows becuase of noise complaints. My friend said they were pricey but I never found out what made them so special. Steve

I know an importer of custom manufactured tilt&turn windows with double hung look (recessed lower window) and triple glazed with sound insulating option. Wood or wood alu clad. You never experienced something like it, but it will not come at home depot prices. For technical reasons these are already x times more silent than any double hung. sound insulating glass option is about 10% more.

We recently had our orignal (also 100+ years old) windows replaced with Marvins (we are landmarked and Marvins are apparently the standard) and just going from the old to new ones that properly fit and have insulation added around them has made a huge difference plus they look really good (our busy-body neighbors, the type to who report all kinds of crap to landmarks, all love them). We get a lot less street noise but I’m sure you could get better. If you’ve not looked at windows much, there is some serious sticker shock and I imagine any better sound-blocking glass is really pricey. Our windows are from Lucky Window Products (recommended by many) and our contractor installed them but I’ve heard good things about LWP’s installers. They came out several times to make sure the measurements and decisions were right (colors, etc.). They might be a good place to start.

Meanwhile, we have a nice Eastlake table for mail sorting, courtesy of DIBS, on the parlor floor, and plan to put in a bench and hooks for shoes and jackets on the ground floor — while these activities take place on the opposite floors! We’re all mixed up.

Thanks, Bob, maybe we’ll try that. My thinking was that people would be able to reach in and take our mail — then again, why would they want to? We tried a bin on the ground, which didn’t work at all. Mail never went anywhere near it. Anyway, it sure is a mess, so a basket sounds nice.

Our house originally had the mailslot in the door on the parlor level. Then the door was replaced, and now the mail carrier throws it through the metal door under the stoop onto the ground. If we get a new vintage door with a mailslot on the parlor level, we would be returning the mail drop to its original location. Is this acceptable? How would they know the difference anyway? Seems as soon as they got a new mail carrier they would no longer know.

I heard what bobjohn said. No new delivieries above ground floor. Remember, the USPS employees are an entitled union lot and there’s never anything above and beyond that most of them would do. Mine goes through the grated door below the stoop. Whoever gets home first, me or the tenants sorts it. I also removed some of the grate bars at the top so packages would fit through.

There are a lot of grandfathered postal situations. The requirement has nothing to do with your neighborhood, but when you put in your mailbox. I think the “new” regulations go back go back at least 30 years, but most house’s mail drop locations are older than that. Note that I believe that the new single location has to be on the ground floor level. The postman will not climb up to the parlor floor for a new location. Also note that one location per building is for existing building with new mail boxes. When a new row of buildings are built, I think that the mailboxes for several of the buildings need to be grouped at a single location.

Our neighbor, who has a two apartment building, has a locked box attached to the outside of the lower gate. Both they and their tenant have keys. Our building, a multifamily but also a brownstone, has a lock box for the key for the post office. They can come into the first floor foyer and put mail into each of the boxes. It’s all broken, though (and ugly by the way), and they just through a pack of mail through the gate, which we sort into bins on the lower level. Given the propensity for residents to take some time to pick up their mail and the lack of space for a trash can for junk mail in the foyer our neighbor’s solution seems better.

That’s the post office reg, one location per address. You can have multiple slots or boxes at that one location, but they won’t deliver both above and below the stoop. Either you get your tenant’s mail, or they get yours: very cozy.

My neighbor’s house has a door that opens into a vestibule containing separate mail slots for each tenant. It’s a brownstone. I’d call the postal info phone number, because this sounds bogus.
