Shouldn’t take much to install it. Not sure what the relevance is between the window and the brick building… I would do it. Call me at 347-276-6528 Levi SoHoAppliances

we used bay ridge windows for one window and one door. would never use them again. didn’t keep the schedule they promised, didn’t communicate about the delays and were annoyed when I complained.

I agree with pheights_lady any heavy duty drapes will do the trick. What you need to pay attention to is the shadpe of the window and where the curtains would be installed. In order for the curtains to do a good job insulating the room they would need to create a barrier or a kind of an air pocket between the inside of the room and the outside part close to the window. As you can see in the image above the curains are installed overlapping the walls and above the top part of the window. This way they help eliminate draft and create that pocket I mentioned. Aslo the curtains should be installed as clsoe as possible to the wall/window. A rod as shown in the image above will push the curtain away from the wall a bit and create holes on each side that will let cold air in and heat go out. A curtain track to the ceiling will do a better job keeping the curtain close to the wall.
And the last part is the lining, heavy blackout lining or interlining will do a better job than simple translucent lining. They act like a heavy sweater in a cold day rather than just a long sleav shirt.

I spoke to LWP Lucky Window Products, Windows Are We, New York Historic Windows, and Bay Ridge Windows. Of them all LWP and New York Historic Windows were the most responsive and knowlegeable. LWP was more affordable. Historic Windows specializes in Marvins. We are going with LWP but we haven’t actually had the work done yet.

Simpson Door. Dykes Lumber in Brooklyn has a catalogue or you can shop online. You can buy them pre-hung, or just the door unit, which can be trimmed for non-standard sizes. http://www.simpsondoor.com/

If you want the kind of door in the picture, i.e. not full glass but with ~6 inches of wood surround, we ordered ours from Home Depot – the millwork people there knew their stuff, we got a good price, and despite being custom-constructed, we got it in about 3 weeks. Price varies based on configuration, but IIR ours was about $600\. (One interesting note: we really wanted a 3/4 glass door, not a fill glass, but the 3/4 glass was more than triple the price – go figure.)

We used Hellas Glass which are coop also uses for their rentals. Not sure they’re the best priced but they were easy to deal with and we were happy with their work.

apparently, door thefts used to be pretty common back in the day. less so now. today they go for the gates and fencing. i watched obne morning as a white van was stealing gates on my block. they are very efficient and most people think that these guys are doign something legal.

Looks like you were in the process of refininshing them… No ransom note yet? Brownstoner should run a service similar to the Art Loss Registry where stolen architectural elements, such as gates and, WTF! doors could be kept on file. A reader might come across them at some salvage yard.

How did this happen? Was it an outside or an inside job? Are you saying somebody without keys or authorized access drove up and entered your house by a window or another door, opened the front doors from the inside, unscrewed the hinges, loaded the doors in to a truck and drove off without alerting any neighbors or residents? My neighbors here at the Brooklyn Navy Yard makes new doors like those as a specialty, but they also do all types of architecural woodwork interior and exterior. I highly recommend Omar and Belda. for me WindowsWeAre were freaking terrible! Had them replace windows on the back of my house and it was a disaster from the estimate on (measuring was the only postive). i’m still waiting for them to fix some things they screwed up on the install last year…but i’ve given up. For the front of my place i plan on using bay ridge who i’ve heard are great (my neighbor had gorgeous installs recently).

you think those lower priced brands are on par in performance with the the XP series and as quiet? as im not a renter i would like to get a good unit, though the Kuhl seems excessive now.

I would stick with a GE or Frigidaire if you are not getting the Kuhl series. The Friedrich standard line is simply more expensive because of the name. The XP series are better but very few people bought them. Most renters dont want to invest too much in an ac. You should buy an 8000 btu. I always use sq ft x35\. If your space gets more heat from the roof, has bad insulation, or gets heat from the floors below then do sq x 45\. If your place is cold in the winter than it will be hot in the summer. The point of the ac is cool down your space using the least amount of electricity. No sense in saving a few dollars buying something on the smaller side and then spending your savings + on electric bills this summer. Levi Capland

How are the Friedrich XP series? As the Kuhls are very expensive, I was considering the XP series which has always been their mid-line. They are also made domestically and they seem like they dont look as good as Kuhls, and they lack some fancy features, but might be a good compormise. They are discontinued and selling last years models and then there will only be the high and low options. Also- how many BTU’s are necessary for a 190 sq ft 2nd floor (top floor) of brownstone bedroom? Some say 6000, some say go higher to 7500-8000??? Thanks
