Architect suggestions

Hi,     I am currently in contract on a brownstone in Clinton Hill that needs a good amount of renovations – relocating kitchens and bathrooms, changing floor plans, upgrading electrical and plumbing, altering c of o, etc.  I’ve read lots of older posts with architect recommendations, and have dug through many of their websites and reviews.  I’ve seen some amazing work, and have added a few to my shortlist, but still haven’t felt like I’ve found the right one for my project.    The building has lots of original molding, and I am interested in preserving the integrity of the original style of the house.  A lot of what I’ve seen seems to impose contemporary design upon late-19th century style – it often feels unbalanced to me.  I would like to reinstall the easy elegance of the brownstone without making it feel imposing and uninviting.  I want to reimagine the layout and rethink ways to get light to the center of this row house.  I want to seamlessly integrate trending energy-saving ideas within an authentic, neo-Classical package…  And a dash of farmhouse sensibility.        Ultimately, I realize, it is about the relationship.  I imagine feeling uneasy about working with a larger firm, though I’m open to the possibility of working with one.  My gut thinks that this project would do well with someone who is on their own, or a part of a small operation that isn’t over-worked or over-paid.         Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I am also in search of a general contractor, so ideas for that would also be welcome.  Thankyou so much for your help!!

Funny, I also opted to keep – actually uncover all the original woodwork that was covered with years of paint.  Basically bring back the original look / feel of the brownstone but obviously with an updated design / style.  I went with All Renovation Construction (http://www.allrenovationllc.co…), they understood exactly what I was looking for and made sure throughout the process that I was satisfied with their progress.   https://plus.google.com/photos/113755599405368789154/albums/5439633168673960561

May I make a suggestion, based on my renovation experience? To preserve moldings and other architectural details, move as few walls as possible. Skimcoat the existing plaster, if it needs it. You can make new walls match the old walls by skimcoating the drywall and you can re-create matching moldings either by cutting a custom router bit or creating a resin mold. Of course, these will have to be painted. You can try to salvage existing moldings and reuse them. However, be forewarned that it’s common for bits and pieces to break off.

Hi there, I would suggest Architensions, they have done some work for a mezzanine in my loft. However, I have seen a couple of brownstone renovations before I hired them, and based on what I have seen they are definitively capable of meeting your objectives. Plus, it is a small firm with a principal that has many years of experience for an international acclaimed architect, so you get the great quality and design and the personal relationship with the architect, and not just his employees.
