Have a really old tile fireplace that I want to paint. There’s a new baby in the house so I want the safest type of paint around. The tiles are somewhat glazed though I’d rather not sand them because who knows what they are made of. Does anyone know what type of primer/paint would hold the color (not peel) and also be safe for a little baby? Thanks!

FWIW I think those green tiles are beautiful and it would be a shame to paint them. However, if you’re determined to do so, just scrub them throughly with detergent and water, let them dry completely, and apply a high quality latex primer and paint. Check with the paint store about what type of primer they recommend, although I doubt that it’s critical. I’d suggest a glossy paint, which should hold up best, but that’s a matter of taste. Please don’t sand or abrade the surface of the tiles; it’s not necessary for painting and someone might want to restore them in the future.

I really love those tiles- I wouldn’t paint them. I know you may be tired of looking at them but really, they’re beautiful and the paint won’t look nearly as nice!
