In a one family house the boiler and furnace will be in a room 11 by 6 feet cement board on two sides cement on two sides there’s no windows should I just put events in the cement board? And what is a fire damper. Could a fire damper be put in cement board?

There must be direct fresh air vents to the outside. The heating experts will chime in, but vent sizes are specified by code.

nycsport is correct. The NYC Mechanical Code Chapter 7 deals with Combustion Air requirements.

This is ridiculous. I’ve tried retyping my long ass reply 4 times and I keep getting an error from Brownstoner. Bottom line check the Mechanical Code. It’s all in Chapter 7.

Sounds similar to our mechanical room that was recently part of a cellar upgrade. We hired pros to do it all (we had a had a fair amount of filing to do for structural, electrical, etc.) and said we wanted it all to code and since we passed actual inspections, I assume it is. I’m not home and can’t remember the exact set up but I think there’s a duct/hose running through the cement board to our coal chute. The chute has a door on the inside and a fancy Bilco hatch outside (in the front garden) that has vents on it. I think this hatch is a good way to deal with these issues because other contractors working around the blocks near us regularly bring homeowners over to look at it. Not sure about the fire damper.
